Air Freight From China to Norway
When Air Freight Suits Norway
Norway's import profile includes a high proportion of high-value, time-sensitive cargo: oil and gas equipment, marine electronics, pharmaceuticals, medical devices and precision instrumentation. That profile suits air freight well, because the freight cost per kilogram matters far less when the value per kilogram is high.
Air also sidesteps a structural issue with Norwegian sea freight: many services tranship through North European hubs, which stretches the total transit. Air lands directly at Oslo Gardermoen.
The Gateway Airport
Oslo Gardermoen (OSL) is Norway's principal air cargo gateway and the destination for the overwhelming majority of China air freight. It carries full customs clearance infrastructure, which matters because Norway is outside the EU customs union and every consignment is a genuine import.
How Air Freight Cost Is Calculated
Air freight is billed on chargeable weight — the greater of the actual gross weight and the volumetric weight. Volumetric weight is normally calculated by dividing the volume in cubic centimetres by 6000.
This matters most for lightweight, bulky cargo, which can be charged as though it weighed substantially more than it does. Packing density is one of the few cost variables an exporter directly controls, and one of the most frequently overlooked.
Rates also move with fuel and security surcharges, seasonality and available capacity. The pre-Chinese-New-Year rush and the autumn stocking period both lift rates and squeeze space.
Transit Planning Range
Commercial planning range — not a guaranteed transit time.
| Service | Typical planning range |
|---|---|
| Airport-to-airport | typically 3–5 days |
| Door-to-door including clearance | typically 5–8 days |
| Express courier, small parcels | typically 3–6 days |
Customs and VAT on Air Shipments
Air cargo clears through the same Norwegian system as sea cargo: declarations are lodged with Tolletaten via TVINN, classified against the Tolltariffen.
Import VAT is charged at 25%, assessed on the customs value plus duty, excise where applicable, and freight and insurance. Because air freight costs more than sea, the transport component inside the VAT base is correspondingly larger.
For B2C consignments valued at NOK 3,000 or less, the VOEC scheme requires foreign sellers to collect 25% MVA at the point of sale rather than at the border.
